Understanding Display Types
Why Display Types?
Normally, the Default page layout controls the appearance of interior pages on a Freedom site. But in some cases, you'll want some interior pages to look different than others. Display types are special "interior" page layouts that can be assigned to specific content.
You can think of display types as variations on the Default page layout. In almost all cases, your display types will contain a [[Content]] variable, just like the Default page layout. This variable will display content from the Blue Interface.
Typical uses of display types include building a company intranet or members-only section, setting up a section of the site with a different color scheme, or creating interior pages with content-specific features, for example within a sidebar or footer.
Setting Up a Display Type
There are two steps involved in setting up a display type: The first is creating it, and the second is linking content to it.
To create a display type, create a page layout and add your HTML. If the display type will be similar to the Default page layout, we recommend copying the Default layout and making the changes rather than starting from scratch. Before you save the page, make sure the "Make this page layout a Display Type" option near the bottom of the screen is checked.
Once you've created a display type, the next step is linking content to it. When content is linked to the display type, that content will display on the live website with the display type, rather than the Default page layout, determining how the page looks.
You can assign any of the following to a display type.
- A single web page or form. For a web page, edit the one you want to assign and select the display type from the "Display Type" drop-down menu. For a form, this option is visible after editing the form, then clicking the green "Edit" button on the right side of the screen to get to its configuration settings.
- A module category. You can assign an entire module category to a display type by opening the module in Blue, switching to the Categories tab, editing the category and selecting the display type from the "Display Type" drop-down menu.
- A module layout. When editing a module layout, there will be a "Display Type" drop-down menu, which you can use to assign it to a display type.
- An entire module. Assigning an entire module to a display type is done on the Display Types tab in the Layouts Module. From there, you'll see a list of all the modules on your site than you can assign to a display type. Edit the module you'd like to assign, then select the display type from the drop-down menu.
Please note that the "Display Type" drop-down menu will only appear if your site has at least one display type.
