How To Choose The Best Web Design Company For Your Nonprofit

So, you’ve decided to redesign your website. You’re probably feeling excited...and a little nervous.

While a website redesign is a huge undertaking, with the right team of website designers by your side, it will be a smooth and stress-free process.

That’s why choosing a website design company for your nonprofit is so important. As someone who has been in the business for 15 years, I would like to share some of my tips for choosing the company that will be the best fit for your organization.

(My goal is to be completely unbiased in this post. I want to help you choose the best web design company, whether it’s my company or not.)

1) Focus less on location

A common starting point for someone looking for a website design company is to search Google for web design companies in [my city]. But just because a company is local doesn’t mean it’s going to be great fit. In fact, local proximity is no longer even a necessary factor. Teleconferencing is easier than ever today, and software such as Skype and GoToMeeting make it incredibly easy to present website mockups and software demonstrations through a screen-share.

Instead of focusing on local website providers, throw your net wider to find the very best company for your organization. Don’t limit your search to only those companies that happen to be within 15 miles of your office.

2) Focus more on expertise

Rather than searching by location, look for website design companies that specialize in your industry. A company that has an expertise in your specific industry will have a deep understanding of your needs. And, because they already work with many organizations similar to yours, they will have solutions pre-tailored to meet your specific requirements.

You should not have to educate a website design company on your organization's mission and requirements. Rather, they should educate you on the wisdom they have gained from the many similar organizations they serve.

A great way to identify a few specialized companies is to do a simple search: [my industry] websites. This will often pull up companies that specialize in that industry. If you are a chamber of commerce, for example, you might search Google for best chamber of commerce websites or chamber of commerce web design.

3) Consider pricing

Before you start talking to web design companies, make sure you know how much your budget allows you to spend. I always recommend following the Goldilocks principle—not too much, but not too little. There’s no need to spend $50K-$100K on a website, but extremely low (or nonexistent) prices usually indicate lower quality (whether that’s lower quality design, security, support, etc.).

I suggest something in the $8,000-$30,000 range, depending upon requirements

4) Ask the right questions

That first phone call with a potential website design company should involve them asking you a series of well-thought-out questions to understand your exact requirements. This will allow them to propose the best possible solution for your organization. If the website provider you're considering does not approach the introductory call with a keen interest in understanding your requirements through asking you detailed questions, this could be a red flag that they may not be able to meet or exceed your expectations.
