Mobile Websites Made Simple

Tuesday, May 31, 2011
You don't have to look far to realize that we live in a mobile society--now more than ever, people are constantly on the move. As they rush from meeting to meeting and from family gathering to social event, people are becoming ever more dependent upon mobile web browsing to accomplish everyday tasks. The mobile web is booming. It has become critical that all businesses have a mobile-optimized website. In fact, research has shown that more than 5% of all web browsing is now done from a handheld device. While this number might sound low, you most likely wouldn't be willing to tell 1 in 20 customers that you simply cannot serve them. So why alienate them from your website?

When creating a mobile-friendly version of your site, it is important to remember two things:

The mobile web is simple. While they need to experience the key features of your brand, visitors to your mobile website are often looking to accomplish a quick task. They want to know your contact information, hours of availability, and details about the products or services you offer. The experience should be clean, straightforward, and simple.

Simple, however, doesn't mean shallow. The mobile web is dynamic. You should create an engaging user experience that avoids redirect loops and eliminates the need to scroll in multiple directions. Phone numbers should be linked to allow one-click phone calls and the ability to send emails simply.

While it sounds like complex work, you don't need a completely different set of resources to have a strong mobile presence. With the right content management system, it can be an easy task. There are three major questions you should ask when considering how a content management system can simplify your mobile-friendly site:

1. Does the software offer a mobile administrative interface so that website updates can be done via a mobile browser?

2. Does the content management system offer the ability to easily build mobile sites without extra time or effort?

3. Does the content management system offer native app integration with a variety of mobile devices?

If you are certain that your content management system can handle all three of these tasks, then establishing your web presence should be simple. You can eliminate the need to cross-post content from a main site to a mobile-friendly version, and best of all, you can ensure that all of your visitors are able to quickly and effortlessly find the information they seek.
