Learning to Ride a Bicycle

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

If you’re reading this blog post, then most likely you know how to ride a bike. (And if you don’t, I strongly encourage you to get out more!) For those of you who do, remember the bike-riding learning process? It took a lot of practice, and a lot of mistakes, before one day everything just clicked. Now, looking back, you’ll never have to re-learn how to ride – it will always be a part of you. Even if you haven’t taken a bike ride in more than 10 years, I bet you could jump back on and start riding right away, without going through the trouble of learning the skills all over again.

Wouldn’t it be nice if learning complicated skill sets were the same way? In many ways, they are – you can learn them once, and never have to re-learn them again. It can be easy to embed those skills in that brain of yours, but it takes practice and reinforcement– just like all the practice you did when learning to ride your bike.

One company that does a great job of reinforcement learning is Apple. (Side note: I recently tweeted about this, and encourage you to follow me on Twitter @accrisoft.) Apple is doing a great job helping people learn how to use its products as those people transition from a PC to Mac-based environment. Apples does this through making short, informational videos that are narrowly focused on individual Mac-based solutions.  Encouraging customers like you and me to watch these videos over and over is Apple’s way of reinforcing its products, and before you know it, your mind will automatically know to close your computer applications by scrolling your mouse to the top left corner of your screen instead of the top right. Just like the bike example, once you learn it, you’ll never have to re-learn it again.

Accrisoft is now taking the same approach that Apple has been for years: short, educational training videos. Our training video library is constantly growing, with videos that will help you, as a website provider, learn all the tips and tricks inherent to a Freedom website installation. If you’ve not seen them yet, some of the newest training videos include Photoshop to Freedom, Display Types, and Stylesheets.

Check out these videos, if you haven’t already, and let us know what other training videos you’d like to see developed.

Oh, and one more thing – take some time to go for a bike ride!
